Substance Use Disorder (SUD)
Diagnosis and Treatment for Substance Abuse
Substance Use Disorder (SUD) is a chronic mental health condition characterized by the
compulsive use of substances, such as alcohol, drugs (both legal and illegal), or medications,
despite negative consequences. SUD affects brain function and behavior, leading to an inability
to control substance use. The severity of SUD can range from mild to severe, with addiction
representing the most extreme form.
Treatment for SUD often includes a combination of behavioral therapies, support groups, and, in
some cases, medications to help manage cravings and prevent relapses. Early intervention and
consistent treatment are crucial for successful recovery.
